In 1990, being new to the San Francisco Bay Area, I was scoping out one of the local hobby
shops for car models and HO slot cars, when I saw some photographs behind the counter of
what looked like a slot car track. I was amazed at what I saw! It was the most
detailed and creative track I had ever seen. When I asked the shop owner whose track
it was, he told me it was built by Jason Boye. I found out that Jason just happened
to live a few minutes from my home, so I contacted Jason and made arrangements with him to
see the track in person. It was even COOLER than the pictures showed! If
you're into slot cars, you've probably heard of Jason's track...............Le Monzaco! |
|
This is a photo of
The La Rascasse Corner
at Le Monzaco.
I know
this photo is a little dark, but look closely and be aware that
Jason built every detail of this scenery. It is a nearly
exact replica of the La Rascasse restaurant/corner complex at Monaco.
So, as
time went by, Jason, James Baxley
(another HO slot car racing enthusiast I met at a model car swap meet)
and I formed a slot car club and called it the
NSCRC or National Slot Car Racing Club.
|
This is a photo of James
Baxley's Jim Clark
Raceway.
This track was designed and built by James and his brother Brian.
(Long before I met them.)
This is also where the NSCRC has held it's 4, 24 hour races!
Seeing
these 2 tracks, prompted me to started building my own track.
I named it Laguna Point.

Here's a track map of
Laguna Point.
So, with three cool tracks in the S.F. bay area,
the NSCRC
and all it's club members
would get to run races on each of these tracks emulating
races run on actual 1/1 scale racing circuits.
Sadly, Laguna Point sustained catastrophic
water damage (due to a leaky roof) and had to be destroyed.
So,
Jason, James and I talked about trying to hand route a track
to replace Laguna Point.
We were tired of:
All the
same radius corners
that the manufactures dealt us,
having to deal with poor electrical connections,
and track joints that could de-slot the cars.
So, thus was born....

Champion Raceway!
(To learn more about this and other tracks, click on TRACKS Page link below)
Champion Raceway
incorporated:
Large radius corners (previously unobtainable)
Changing radius corners (of seemingly endless variances)
All the
corners are mildly banked
(to enhance the look of realism and improve road holding)
Champion Raceway was also built to be portable.
It breaks down into 2) 4' x 8' tables (that fit into Jason's van).
It takes about 15 minutes to set up Champion Raceway,
and about 10 minutes to take it down.
We've
taken Champion Raceway to model shows, hobby shops
and hot rod car shows, where we rent time to run on it and
take orders for more tracks.
I
currently have orders for some more tracks of varying specifications.
As I complete them I will post photos of them on my
TRACKS page.
I have
personally built or been involved with the building of over
25 other tracks.
I was finally prevailed upon to sell Champion Raceway
and I miss not having my own track right now,
but there are still many cool tracks here in the S.F. bay area
and many more to come!

I am also a slot car
collector/trader.
I mostly collect HO and the newer 1/32nd scale cars.
If you're interested in buying, selling or trading,
send me an email.
I have posted many cars for sale on the "Buy/Sell/Trade" page
at my new website. Please visit it at:

I will do my best to keep it updated with new cars I've found to sell.
So, keep checking back for some new ones you may not have seen.

In
November 1997 members from the NSCRC traveled to England
to compete in the HO 24 Hours Of Le Mans to try to break
the Guiness Book of World Records for this event.
Break
it we did! We won the race handily.
This was our second attempt. Our first trip (in 1996) we competed
in this event and finished a respectable third.

TEAM
USA RETURNED TO ENGLAND
NOVEMBER 1998 TO DEFEND
THE TROPHY!
Again
we won. This time by not as big a margin, but
we never really had any challengers.

In
November 1999 two members from the NSCRC
again competed in the HO 24 Hours Of Le Mans for the forth time.
Jason Boye and I along with Rick Burneson, Jim Hoer and two Englishmen
(Deane Walpole & Phil Rees) raced to third place.

In
November 2000 Jason Boye, and I
again competed in the HO 24 Hours Of Le Mans for the fifth time!
Rick Burneson, Deane Walpole & Phil Rees joined us again.
Another NSCRC member Greg Katz also help out this year.
We had better equipment than the previous year
and we were able to race much harder.
We led for the first 1/3rd of the race.
Unfortunately, we had already run through our best motors,
and couldn't retaliate and wound up second.

HO Le Mans 2001
We did it!! We WON again!!
Team USA is batting 500 with 3 wins in the last 6 years.
Sam & Aaron Shearman have only been with us when we won,
so they are batting 1000!

In
2002, I didn't go, but Jason did. He teamed up with a British
team: Southern Comfort, and they won.

In
2003, I formed a new team called: Team Corvette USA.
We lead for a few hours early on, but then fell to second
in the mid-morning hours, and carried on to finish 2nd.
I want thank all my team members for their contribution.
Rick Burneson (who started the first Team USA)
David Nier (A rookie and turn out to be our best driver)
Mike Pope (Another rookie with a VERY respectable effort)
Deane Walpole (one of my best blokes)
